Bermuda Race Green Team: a new approach to sustainability

For the past few race cycles, Newport Bermuda Race organizers have steadily increased the effort to make the race a Clean Regatta by the standards of Sailors for the Sea. Over three races, the race received bronze, silver, and then gold certification in 2018.

This year, the Newport Bermuda "Green Team" took a different tack that could be equated to a "pull" marketing strategy as opposed to the more aggressive "push" campaign—and its members of the crews on at least 50 boats who will be doing the pulling!

Bermuda enters three boats

Representing the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, which has hosted the finish of all 52 editions of the race, Dr. Stephen Sherwin (Hamilton, Bermuda) will make his ninth start as skipper since 2000 when his Corby 41.5 Nasty Medicine takes the start on Friday, June 17.

Bermuda will also be represented by Brian Hillier's J/125 Crossfire and the island's 112-foot sail-training flagship, Spirit of Bermuda.

Emergency crew replacement notice

With 200+ boats signed up for this year's race and Covid still a travel concern, emergency replacement crew needs are more important than ever. The race organizers suggest that you consider connecting with Offshore Passage Opportunities (OPO), an official race supporter, to plan for emergency crew. Contact or call 1-800-4-PASSAGe (800-472-7724). (There is no charge for these services to owners in the Bermuda Race.)

Special Entry is required to compete for five race prizes

Each year some sailors fail to register for the Special Trophies before the race and subsequently miss out on some terrific prizes they could have won! These five trophies require special registration:
