Serenading participants down the pontoons and along the streets of Mindelo by drummers and Mendingas dancers, the procession lead everyone to the old fish market where the eagerly awaited ARC+ Leg 1 Prizegiving took place yesterday evening.

After a welcome speech by Suzana Tetlow, ARC+ Event Manager, and words of thanks to everyone involved in the rally's stopover in Mindelo, Mark Burton, ARC+ St Vincent Event Manager, called up the winning boats as the results were read out. To view all the results for ARC+ Leg 1 please go to the Results Page.

The Old Fish Market now serves as a Sea Museum sharing the maritime history of São Vicente and provided the perfect venue for the evening. Organised by Aldeias Infantis SOS, the ladies of the charity provided everyone with a delicious buffet to include the famous dish of the Cape Verde, Cachupa (a slow cooked stew of corn, sweet potatoes, fish and meats).

Aldeias Infantis SOS helps local children who live on the street of Mindelo. Their campaign is "Children do not belong on the street". Supporting these children and providing them with education, food and support has made a significant impact to lower addictions and deter other children from being on the streets and in danger. In support of SOS, World Cruising Club pay the charity to run the evening and the local ladies have the opportunity to set up stalls within the venue where participants can also support the charity and purchase local goods and handicrafts.

The evening continued with more folk dancing and traditional music and participants continued to enjoy the fayre. The ARC+ crews have been embracing the local culture here in Mindelo since their arrival and a great night was had by all.

Tomorrow sees the start of Leg 2 as the fleet splits off into two different destinations, St Lucia and St Vincent. Now in its second year, 21 boats out of the ARC+ fleet of 93 vessels overall will head towards the Blue Lagoon Marina in St Vincent. The last of preparations are in full swing and everyone is ready for the off tomorrow morning.
